Comparison of Lens Focal Lengths in Excel

Thinking of buying a DSLR lens can be intimidating to say the least. While Nikon APS-C sensors have a crop factor of 1.5, Canon has a smaller sensor giving a crop factor of 1.6. So if a lens (say) 18-200mm is used on a Full Frame it is 18-200, on a Nikon APS-C (and others) it is a 27-300mm, while on a Canon APS-C it will be 29-320mm!

To buy a general walkaround lens one might be looking for the longest focal length or a focal length that meets a particular requirement, e.g wide-angles for creative and landscape, medium telephotos for portraiture and zones, and long telephotos for wildlife and sports. So how do you compare these focal lengths VISUALLY.

This is an excel sheet that I made (for personal use, initially) for exactly the same purpose. The sheet is pretty self explanatory, however please note that the higher range focal length value on the chart is plotted as a difference, and so if you change the data you will have to manually add that particular DATA LABEL for the chart to look correct. If you sort the data table in anyway, the chart will update automatically.

Enjoy! Do let me know which one you bought!
