Pete Riley answers the door one morning and lets in a parent’s worst nightmare. On his doorstep is Miles Lambert, a stranger who breaks the devastating news that Pete’s son, Theo, isn’t actually his son–he is the Lamberts’, switched at birth by an understaffed hospital while their real son was sent home with Miles and his wife, Lucy. For Pete, his partner Maddie, and the little boy they’ve been raising for the past two years, life will never be the same again.
This is definitely my favourite of Delaney’s books. The whole story was so gripping and unlike anything I’ve read before. It became clear early on that the friendship between the two sets of parents was not going to continue for long. Miles clearly wanted Theo from the beginning as the son he was raising wasn’t the perfect son he had envisaged. It was also clear that Lucy was perhaps not in tune with Miles’ intentions and that there was something deeper there. The story never lagged and kept me engaged throughout. It was a frustrating read because it all just seemed so wrong and the way Pete and Maddie were treated throughout was hard to read. At every point they faced obstacles. The ending completely finished the story and there were no loose ends which I was delighted about. Such a good story and I would highly recommend it.
