Three brothers are at the funeral. One lies in the coffin. Will, Brian and Luke grow up competing for their mother’s unequal love. As men, the competition continues – for status, money, fame, women … They each betray each other, over and over, until one of them is dead. But which brother killed him?
This book basically told the life stories of each brother- William, Brian and Luke. The book went from their childhood to their college days to their present lives. I personally really enjoyed this book. I wouldn’t exactly say it’s a thriller or a mystery book because the story focused on their stories and what shaped them rather than which brother was dead. You don’t even find out which one is dead until the last few pages. For me, I actually liked it despite the lack of a thriller element. I liked seeing how they each experienced life and what secrets they were hiding from each other. The brothers that seemed the most together really weren’t and they all had things they’d done wrong. It isn’t Nugent’s typical style of writing and I think some people who only like mysteries won’t like it. I also think some people will find it confusing as it went from 1999 to 1979 to 1976 and then to 1982 for instance. It doesn’t go in any particular order at all, it goes through years, back and forth, completely at random. I didn’t mind this at all and I would definitely recommend this book.
